The paper describes a variant of multi-illuminant recipe formulation algorithm intended for minimisation of metamerism in coloration of textiles and other materials.

The usual single-illuminant formulation strategy follows the requirement of an exact colour match of sample and standard under one single (primary) illuminant. Frequently, a given standard colour cannot be matched non-metamerically by the colorants available i.e. a considerable colour difference between sample and standard occurs under the secondary illuminant.

In such cases a more acceptable match with lower metamerism can be obtained using the recipe produced by the least-metameric formulation strategy. In this strategy the requirement for an exact match under primary illuminant is relaxed and the colorimetric match for the secondary and tertiary illuminants can be improved in turn. The iteration step of the least-metameric recipe formulation algorithm is described and the results of a few laboratory tests are presented.
